Our Belief

Here at Eastbay Osteopathy we strongly believe that health is a state of physical, mental and spiritual balance. With this holistic approach we also believe that our primary role as your complimentary health practitioner is to identify and improve any form of dysfunction in our patients’ musculoskeletal system. By doing so we also facilitate the function of other systems such as vascular and nervous systems as they have close interrelation with the musculoskeletal system. In occasions where we identify some form of dysfunction, unrelated to the musculoskeletal system, we always refer our patients to their GPs. Osteopaths in New Zealand are well trained (they do a five-year Masters degree) in identifying the sign and symptoms of dysfunctional pattern(s) in the body . In rare cases where our patients need deeper medical investigation/treatment we have a fantastic network with some of the best specialist doctors in New Zealand. This includes neurologists, orthopedic and spinal surgeons. Our goal is to get you back on track whilst making sure you receive the most appropriate intervention.

What to expect on your consultation

Consultations are relaxed and friendly. The following section is designed to give new patients an outline of the process that we go through during a typical session. Feel free to contact us if you have further questions.

If you are visiting us for the first time you will need to complete and sign our patient info and consent form. We would recommend arriving 5-10 minutes earlier to complete this form.

This is where you would explain to your practitioner the reason for your visit. Based on the information you provide we may ask further questions to gain a better understanding of your presenting complaint. You can discuss previous intervention and radiology scans (X-ray, Ultrasound, MRI) with your practitioner.

Following case history taking, your practitioner will perform a physical examination. This can include checking postural alignments, examining some of the muscles and joints in your body as well as asking you to do some simple movements such as turning your neck to either side. In addition to this, if necessary, your practitioner may perform some extra tests including measuring your blood pressure, some orthopedic tests and/or checking your reflexes. We advise our patients to wear suitable underwear for this process; however, you are able to be treated fully clothed.

Your practitioner will discuss the probable cause of your symptoms, the expected time-frames involved and the treatment options with you. Your therapist will apply careful hands-on treatment.

Your Consultation Session

A successful clinical outcome is dependent on a thorough case history and careful physical examination. This would give us a better understanding about various components that may be contributing to your complaints. After physical examination, your osteopath will discuss your treatment options with you. If you don’t like manipulative techniques, your practitioner will employ other gentle methods including articulation and massage. Acupuncture can also be a very effective method for you if you prefer more gentle treatment approach.

Long-term Benefits

At Eastbay Osteo, we aim to improve your symptoms and reduce your pain in the short-time but we are also interested in highlighting factors that can improve to achieve long-term effects. Improvements in postural elements and biomechanical factors can usually have significant health benefits. These modifiable components will be discussed with you during your treatment session. We also have a strong networking system with other health practitioners including musculoskeletal and orthopedic specialists, nutritionists and personal trainers. We will do our best to ensure you receive the most effective treatment plan.
